In 1985, Swid Powell commissioned Robert A. M. Stern to design a collection of tabletop objects for its architect-designed series. The Majestic charger, ruby red in color and highlighted with gold, emphasizes richness of material. The plate's strap and buckle pattern evokes a family crest or medallion, yet remains anonymous by virtue of its abstraction. Silver candlesticks, water pitcher, salt and pepper shakers, and bowl reinterpret the classical orders which have been influenced by the restrictions and the possibilities of contemporary production techniques and the requirements of modern entertaining. The ice-bucket offers a monumental character at tabletop scale.
Moderne plates were designed as part of a dessert service for special meals served at the newly refurbished Rainbow Room, atop Rockefeller Center. Inspired by the architecture of the room, the china's jazz-age design is delineated in black, white, and gray. The Festoon plate abstracts a traditional architectural element and renders it in gold.
