An effective campus plan can strengthen the image and architectural identity of a campus, establishing principles and patterns of development which will allow future buildings and outdoor open spaces to reinforce the best of an institution's existing physical image and character and mitigate its weaknesses. In many cases campus master plans are used as tools for developing and improving community relations: a campus plan can do much to foster support from the entire campus community for campus construction projects by communicating the important message that there is consensus around a rational plan for future development.
